H is in the hardware store with his mother. H is 8, free of boundaries, as he fingers the gold luminescent letters. His mother flirts with homely Mr Z over Canary Yellow paint. A moment's decision to pocket two of the letters, and H will cross over a boundary, into a world his mother does not know.

About the Author
Sherrie Flick is the author of the novel Reconsidering Happiness, the flash fiction chapbook I Call This Flirting, and the short story collection Whiskey, Etc. Her stories have appeared in many anthologies and journals, including Flash Fiction Forward, New Sudden Fiction, Ploughshares, and Booth. She has received fellowships from Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, Sewanee Writers’ Conference, Ucross, Atlantic Center for the Arts, and VCCA. She teaches in the MFA and Food Studies programs at Chatham University in Pittsburgh. Her next collection of short stories is forthcoming from Autumn House Press in 2018.
