A soldier recalls the day aliens attacked his village, killing his grandmother and taking his mother. His father had taken him to burn the bodies of the dead, taking his grandmother's finger-bone to bury in the cleft of rocks, performing the old, banned rituals and making the family ghost tree grow.

Years later, the war against the aliens still raging, he must find his father's body and perform the same rituals, carrying on the traditions they fought for.
