When their daughter runs away, the father imagines the worst. If only the mother weren’t so preoccupied with her own image, redecorating the house, or martinis to cope with the stress, then maybe she could be of more assistance. Then, maybe she would recognize what it is that’s been pushing her daughter away, or her husband, too, for that matter. It isn’t that she doesn’t care about her daughter, it’s that she cares too much about her own failures.
