Annie is a home aide for rich old Mr Carter. She hasn't slept for nine nights straight, keeping him safe as he agitates over his hay fields, which haven't been mowed in forever. Her grandson Ryan, a young teacher in New Orleans, contends with his infatuation with a young student whilst contemplating his impending wedding. Though separated by miles, grandmother and grandson both struggle with their life choices.
