He thinks of how they've lived by the Ligurian Sea for so long, they eat it, absorb it, breathe it. As children, they grew up with stories of how the sea saved them over and over. But now the sea has turned against them, and as the waves crash over the boats of generations of fishermen, he surprises everyone by his actions.
